The Lions resumed practice on Sunday, and even before then a lot of news dropped. Let’s dig right in with the latest from training camp.

Alim McNeil is OK!

I’m not going to lie, sometimes I act optimistic when I am worried, and McNeil going down was one of those times. Without McNeil it would have been much harder to generate any sort of interior pressure and defend the run. But after a very short amount of time he is back at camp and seems to be no worse for the wear. Bullet dodged.

Jimmy Rolder Update, Enter Devin White

Per Jordan Schultz, and now being more widely reported, Jimmy Rolder’s injury is not season ending. In fact he is likely to be able to contribute yet this year. What that exactly means is unknown at this point, but good for the young linebacker who was looking quite promising. Here’s hoping we can get him back sooner as opposed to later!

Brad Holmes wasted no time, and is emitting the no nonsense approach the rest of the staff is, by signing arguably the best linebacker available on the market. He logged a whopping 174 tackles in 2025, good enough for 3rd in the NFL. Furthermore he has a stellar athletic profile and flies around the field (4.42 40 yard dash). Jeff Risdon (linked above in his recent podcast on the subject) described him as someone who makes up for lack of technical execution with his athleticism. I love this move, especially with the fact that he is LB3 or LB4 at this point. Adding that caliber of talent that deep is something we haven’t seen this team do a ton of.

At the time of this publishing, and per Spotrac, the only details available about White’s contract are that it is a one year deal.

Derrick Moore Goes Down with a Groin, Kitselman with a Leg

Derrick Moore was taken out of practice today to assess a groin injury. The bright side here is it happened early in camp, but if it’s any sort of significant injury he may miss critical snaps in training camp and preseason. Here’s hoping he can make it back to the field quickly.

Rookie UDFA TE Miles Kitselman went down with a leg injury, and not much else is known at this point. This is unfortunate given there were murmurings he was starting to catch on with the offense and may have been able to fight for the bottom end of the TE depth chart.

Nonetheless, best of luck to Moore and Kitselman. Here’s hoping they make it back to the field soon.

Mile Frazier, Lineman Extraordinaire

Miles Frazier took a ton of snaps with all three teams today, as some of the starters appear to have been pulled to simply one on ones today. He took snaps at both guard and tackle spots, and by most accounts he did well everywhere he was placed. Having such a versatile lineman that can play is a boon, and we may have just found him.

Further Positive Looks from the Offensive Line

Overall it sounds like the offensive line both starting and reserve seem to be starting to find their footing. I have said many times both in writing and to friends, I believe our number one issue last year was our offensive line: Thus, this is great news to hear. Side note: It sounds as though Juice Scruggs filled in for Mahogany whilst he was out, and did a solid job.

DJ Reed is Starting to Look the Part

Multiple people commented on X that DJ Reed is starting to look the part. I heard conflicting reports, but it sounds like he came down with two picks today. The Lions need him to step up and be that cornerback number one with a bullet, let’s hope he continues to perform this way and stays healthy.

Training camp is always up and down, with injuries, and the up and down of day to day performances against the same players. The one observation I would make is that it certainly seems like the Lions are taking their no nonsense approach everywhere, and that includes practice. They are taking reps again when they aren’t perfect. This is a team training to compete in the offseason. Only time will tell if it will work out.

Not a ton of news out of camp today, but lets touch on some quick items

Christian Mahogany Returns to Practice

As I wrote in my prior article, guys jump on and off of NFI and PUP at the beginning of camp often. Mahogany was a quick one, being activated and returning to practice, showing us the battle at LG is alive and well.

Nick Whiteside Dominant

I linked Jeff Risdon’s breakdown above, but MANY people have noted that Nick Whiteside is dominating in camp. This is huge given the loss of Terrion Arnold and the need for folks to step up. Remember, he was a part of the Legion of Whom game versus the Buccaneers last year.

Derrick Moore Owning 1-on-1s

Per Colton Pouncey Derrick Moore was dominating his one on ones today, showing he is working up to being ready to take that spot across from Hutch.

Jameison Williams Taking it to the Next Level

Word from many writers is Jameison Williams has improved big time. I heard the word automatic used (I think again by Risdon) when describing him. This could be huge. Saint is already good, and Williams improved last year let alone his improvement in his routes and hands this year. Add in TeSlaa and Dortch and we could be looking at the best receiver core in the last decade for this team. Only time will tell.

Alim McNeil Neck Injury

Alim McNeil was carted off with a neck injury. However, per the link above, please remember they cart everyone off this time of year and it means nothing. Jeff Risdon stated that Alim was seen talking with the VIPs and families in the VIP tent: While we don’t want to read too much into this, it could be a sign his injury is less serious.

Jimmy Rolder Leg Injury

Also per Jeff Risdon, Jimmy Rolder was helped off the field by a trainer, though he was walking mostly himself. It’s hard to know what his injury is, so we will simply have to wait.

Christian Izien, Back Soon?

If Dan Campbell’s initial comments hold true, Izien should hopefully be back from his flu bug on Sunday (as the Lions don’t have practice Saturday). It will be interesting to see what happens when Izien slots back in with the safeties, as he may be one of our starters to start the year.

Lions camp resumes Sunday, hopefully we will find out more on all the injuries. Furthermore, here is hoping Whiteside and Williams continue their trend upward. The Honolulu Blue kool-aid and hopium are flowing strong!

Training Camp continues and more news drops, some very unexpected. Let’s dive in and see what’s going on with the Lions today

Gibbs Holdout Confirmed

Dan Campbell confirmed that Gibbs is in fact holding out of camp currently. He did say a deal will get done, the question is how long will it take? Ian Rapoport states that Gibbs and the Lions conversation “Do not seem to be as active” as Bijan Robinson. That said, I’m not overly concerned. Holmes has a good history of getting contracts done with his key players, and Gibbs will be fine camp or no camp. In fact, if you really want to spin this positively, you could consider the wear Gibbs isn’t taking by sitting out. However, I would rather have him there working, knocking the rust off, and getting ready for the season. When a deal will come remains to be seen.

Unexpected and Unfortunate News on Giovanni Manu

Dan Campbell also confirmed that Giovanni Manu (who was placed on the Non-Football Injury list late yesterday) will be out for 12-14 weeks with an undisclosed injury. However, the big news here isn’t the injury. The big news is that Dan Campbell stated this injury was not disclosed to the team. For a young man who I think we can all agree was overdrafted, this is likely the final nail in the coffin. It would not surprise me to see the Lions cut bait and cut him in the next few days given his low cap hit and dead money. When/if they do, look for them to bring in a versatile but likely raw offensive lineman to absorb his snaps.

Kerby’s Optimism Continues

In a series of clips from his interview posted on many social media accounts (including Nolan Bianchi, and 97.1 the tickets page’s) Kerby explained how he knew that once the MRI came back he was going to have to rely on his faith in God, and he couldn’t control what would happen once the knee injury was diagnosed. He did seem very optimistic he would see the field again, and leaned again into his faith in that regard. I don’t know if this is overoptimism or enough optimism, but I am still rooting for him to recover and come back as good as ever!

The Lions are Back!

Even though the Manu and Gibbs news isn’t great, it isn’t terrible either. Manu was likely not going to make the roster. Gibbs will be just fine come the season. Kerby is going to work his butt off to try to give everything he has to the Lions. We could be talking about torn ACLs and MCLs at this point, many teams already have. Let’s be thankful that the Lions are back and the news is what it is currently!

The Lions have returned to training camp, and as always, many storylines have emerged. Let’s dive right into what is going on (and Dan Campbell’s presser today) and what it may mean for the upcoming season.

Weight and Conditioning Tests

Dan Campbell started his press conference by touching on the fact that all but one player made “their weight and conditioning tests”. Why is this important? Historically (this is from my memory, to be clear) the Lions have always had a few players miss the mark and work through it, thus shortening their time for practice. I think this aligns with the team’s approach that there’s no messing around this year, they have to be disciplined and hit the ground running. It’s refreshing that nearly everyone showed up ready to do their job. Let’s hope this helps on the injury front as well.

Christian Mahogany - Non-Football Injury

Christiany Mahogany started camp on the Non Football Injury list, which is not ideal given there is a fight for the starting left guard position. Non Football Injury is exactly what it sounds like, Christian Mahogany sustained an injury while he was not at a Lions or NFL facility. We don’t have details but Dan stated in his presser today that “he needs a couple days and he will be ready”. So, no big loss or anything to be worried about long term. We have seen cases like this year in and year out in training camp.

Kerby Joseph - Physically Unable to Perform

When asked about Joseph, Dan immediately said “everything that I told you in the spring still applies, we’ve been working to this… he’s running on ground… we’re starting to do change of direction. We’re not gonna grind this for another two or three weeks. I cannot give you a true answer. He’s working his tail off, he has not really had a vacation. He’s been here with our guys busting his tail. So he’s putting in the work. He feels pretty good right now. We got a long way to go, there is still an unknown.”

A final quote that helps us put all the headlines in context “To me, if we got him back for week one, that would be a bonus. Like Woah. I don’t expect that, I’m not looking for that. I feel like he is more on the Branch plan a little bit, and that is everything goes well and everything goes according to plan with him. We got everything on our side. But he’s doing well”

When I saw the headlines that Kerby would not be ready for week one, I was concerned. However, reading the quotes above, I think it adds needed context. We still don’t know with Kerby and I’m admittedly starting to get more worried. At the end of the day, though, we won’t know until he starts cutting and live contact. We will truly know what we have in him then.

Christian Izien - Non-Football Illness

Same NFI list as Mahogany, but for an illness versus an injury. Dan stated that Izien has a “little flu bug” and they hope to have him back by Friday. This is best case scenario, and it’s good to know we dodged the mono bullet.

Brian Branch - Physically Unable to Perform

Dan stated “Branch is doing well, his will be, obviously PUP, there’s no setbacks. Take it as it comes and we’ll see. I’m sure late training camp, maybe early September he can start practicing, we’ll see. But he’s doing well.” Essentially nothing new here, Branch should be back for game five or six would be my expectation.

Tyler Conklin - Physically Unable to Perform

We got the most news from Dan on Conklin that we have seen. He “got a little calf back in the spring”. Dan suggested it will only take a few weeks before he comes back, assuming he suffers no setbacks. This is welcome news as Conklin looks to fight for the Lions TE2 position, and would be a marked upgrade over Brock Wright assuming he can return to form.

Dan on Terrion Arnold

“It’s unfortunate but we made the move we felt was best for us.” He stated he addressed the team on that last night. He went on to say they “felt pretty good with the competition in that room” between young guys and veterans. The fact that Dan got right after it with the team is important, it’s getting the elephant out of the room. Let’s hope the team can overcome Arnold’s absence, and that this helps the culture in the long term.

Dan on Abney and McCreary

“They will take some outside reps.” This was the key point for me. Dan went on to say they will play nickel too, but making sure we have both these guys checked out at the outside position is the point that stuck out to me. This is important, and will help us to put our best DBs in the best places.

So Where Does This Leave Us?

Dan was his normal, transparent self again, and I loved it. Most of the news we got was positive. Understanding where Conklin is at is a good thing, and I’m less concerned about the tight end room now. Kerby is still largely an unknown, and we all hoped he would be ready for camp, but the “Branch timeline” makes me a little more positive (although still worried) on that front. Mahogany’s good news is huge. Knowing McCreary and Abney will get more reps on the outside is good as well. All in all, a good way to start camp and positive signs almost across the board. Let’s hope this trend continues!

My friends, it is that time of year. Tomorrow on July 28th the Lions will kick off training camp for the 2026 season. As we head into training camp, let’s dig in on a few pieces of news that have dropped.

Initial PUP List Released

Yesterday, the Lions released the list of players who will begin the season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Players that are placed on the PUP list are players who are suffering from a football related injury and are not yet ready to practice. Players can remain there throughout training camp, and if they are unable to clear PUP prior to the cutdown to the 53 man roster, they are not eligible to play until the fifth game of the season. Players can be activated from the PUP at any time during training camp.

The Lions placed Brian Branch, Kerby Joseph, and Tyler Conklin on the PUP. Let’s break down each one individually

Brian Branch

Brian Branch was very much expected to start training camp on the PUP. While there have been some murmurings of him being available earlier than expected, nothing concrete has emerged. I have heard estimations everywhere from him being available in week six, all the way to Thanksgiving. At this point I would simply expect that he will not be available until (at very minimum) the fifth game of the season. If he does better than that, it’s just the cherry on top.

Kerby Joseph

Kerby Joseph has been the subject of much discussion as of late. Many simply assumed he would start on PUP, and yet Kerby came back at those people and suggested via social media that he may not start on PUP. Well he has, and I don’t know that it really changes anything. He is dealing with a potentially serious and persistent knee injury. What we can hope for is to see him working with trainers off to the side on day one or two of camp, and that he comes off of the PUP list anytime. We should all want for him to be OK, as he is by far the best safety on this team, and if he is unable to play at 100%, his absence will be felt. Good luck Kerby!!

Tyler Conklin

Oh, the giant question mark that is Tyler Conklin. In my recent article I wrote that perhaps the Lions should have signed another tight end (furthermore I suggested that Conklin may have a jones fracture, which has turned out to be incorrect, and I have updated the article and posted a retraction accordingly). It is important that the Lions get Conklin back as quickly as possible. Tomorrow we should hear from Dan Campbell, and the hope is he will be able to provide more news on Conklin. Conklin represents a potential upgrade at TE2, and would be welcome and utilized in this offense.

Troy Reeder Joins the LB Room

The Lions announced that they have signed Troy Reeder today. Reeder is a solid depth linebacker and will find himself fighting with the likes of Jimmy Rolder, Damone Clark, Joe Bachie, and others for a reserve linebacker spot. In 2025 he played 17 games, starting one, and notching 25 tackles, 17 of which were solo. Reeder is north of 30 years old, but is dependable, playing 17 games in 4 of his last 5 seasons. Given his history with the Rams front office, it should be no surprise he is being tried here, and he has a good shot to lock down a reserve linebacker spot.

Bonus: Vita Vea Requests Trade from the Buccaneers

While writing this article, news has dropped (per Adam Schefter) that Vita Vea has requested a trade from the Buccaneers. I know next to nothing about the situation, however, I would LOVE to see Vea come to the Lions. Brad doesn’t have a big history of being involved in these types of trade talks, but there’s always a chance. Bringing in this dynamic lineman would prove a solid upgrade. However, Vea may not like the idea of playing second fiddle to Alim McNeil and Tyleik Williams.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

OK, perhaps the most wonderful time of the year isn’t the start of training camp. However, it feels good to get fresh news and talk about new things! The Lions have a good chance to bounce back this year, thus excitement is in the air. The only question that remains is will the Lions bounce back?

As time has gone on, I have assessed and re-assessed the Lions roster needs. I’m no expert, I come by that honestly. However, after much thought, I think we should talk about a particular position that may be shorthanded depending on injury status. Let’s dive in.

The Lions Tight End Conundrum

The Lions currently carry four tight ends in total. Sam LaPorta, Brock Wright, Tyler Conklin and Jackson Meeks. Their current statuses are as follows:

Sam LaPorta -

Sam LaPorta has been fully cleared after disc surgery in his back. This is a relief for sure, as the Lions offense did not look the same without him last year. However, there are a couple pressing questions. Though cleared, will he start immediately, or require additional conditioning to get going? Will he start on PUP? How long will it last? And will he last the whole season? There is a lot we don’t know. While things are trending in the right direction, I am still a bit… uneasy trusting him. I will need to see him in pads and on the field regularly to ease my worries.

Brock Wright -

Brock Wright is Brock Wright. He isn’t a stellar tight end, but he generally does what he is asked to do acceptably as a reserve tight end. However, last year he couldn’t play all games, and when he played he seemed off to me. Like he had taken a step back. While I certainly want him on the team, I would feel much better with him as TE3.

Tyler Conklin -

Tyler Conklin is kind of a question mark, as he was missing from OTAs. Jeff Risdon of Detroit Lions Podcast stated on a recent issue of the Daily DLP that Conklin was recovering from a jones fracture last year, and that likely had something to do with his absence from OTAs. The preceding quote has been removed as I was incorrect and in my reference. I loved the Conklin signing, but the idea of him recovering from an injury at his age (30) makes me a little more concerned than I would like. To be fair, we may have nothing to talk about if Conklin shows up to training camp, but only time will tell.

Jackson Meeks -

Word on the street is Jackson Meeks is converting to tight end. This will make him a small receiving tight end. This seems like an experiment to make room for him on the roster. I certainly like the thought of another tight end, but I don’t know if I see Meeks is the right fit there.

If Conklin can’t play, and LaPorta has issues, the Lions are in hot water.

So Who?

The tight end barrel is pretty dry at the Lions price point, but if you’re looking for a tight end similar to Conklin (older with the possibility of production, provides a veteran target and presence, can be had for a relatively small contract) I would point to Zach Ertz. He had a brief stint with the Lions a few years back. He is 35, so he’s not going to jump off the stat sheet, but he could slot in relatively easily. It’s not ideal, but he would fit that mold of what the Lions got with Conklin. If the Lions added him for camp, at very least, my worries about the position would be eased.

Every year, the NFL tweaks and adjusts rules in order to keep professional football fair and safe. Opinions are often varied on if these goals are met, but regardless the game we all know and love does change. In preparation for the 2026 season, let’s dig into the rules that have changed this year, and what they could mean for the game of football. Onside Kick - Available at All Times

Beginning in 2026, teams will now be able to declare an onside kick at any time that they would kick the ball. They still have to declare the kick, but it can happen at any time. Prior to 2026 onside kicks could only be declared by the trailing team, and only in the 4th quarter.

This change actually adjusts strategy when you are trailing considerably. Simply imagine a team is down by two possessions in the third quarter after just scoring, and their defense hasn’t been getting the job done. If they opt to onside kick, and fail to convert, they may still have time to bring about a comeback even though they gave up good field position. Perhaps it’s not a game changer, but it allows more options when you are playing from behind.

Kicking off from the 50-yard line

In 2025, if a team kicked off from the 50 yard line (this would generally be following a penalty), there was an incentive to kick the ball out of bounds as it would place the ball at the 25. Normal touchbacks were generally more yards (30 or 35 depending on the year), so it was a better option to kick the ball out of bounds. The rule now states that a touchback will result in the ball being placed at the receiving team’s 20 yard line. Thus, removing the incentive to kick out of bound in this situation.

Given this is very situational, I don’t expect this rule to move the needle at all. The NFL competition committee saw value in doing so though, and thus they have.

Receiving Team’s Kickoff Lineup

Previously, six players needed to have their foot on the restraining line for kickoff. Quite simply this rule changes to five player allowing another player to be placed elsewhere on the kickoff.

The “dynamic kickoff” previously introduced to the NFL, with the intent of lowering injuries on kickoffs, gets its next iteration. While Dave Fipp (Lions Special Team’s Coordinator) may have feelings one way or the other on this, I sure don’t. The proof will be in the product on the field, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for this to make a big change.

Flagrant Acts With No Flag

This rule allows very apparent or flagrant acts committed by players, that may not have been flagged, to be discussed by referees and designated league and officiating staff for possible disqualification from the game.

Additional discussion between the league and officiating leadership in these situations is probably a good thing (in my opinion). Just because a referee didn’t see the violation in the moment, doesn’t mean the player should be off the hook. I have seen too many situations where players have gotten away with things that should have resulted in potential ejection.

Temporary 1 Year Rule Regarding Temporary Officials

In the spring, there was a lot of concern around the possible use of temporary officials if there was a strike by the referees. However, since then, the NFL and the NFL Referees Association have reached a collective bargaining agreement. This rule would have allowed apparent errors in calls to be reversed by the NFL in real time to ensure the sanctity of the game with less seasoned/temporary referees. The signing of the agreement essentially renders this rule useless.

It’s Not Nothing…

Well, it’s not like nothing changed, but certainly nothing drastic. The onside kick rule being the most potentially impacting to a game. Only time will tell. However, I expect that the game will continue largely as normal, and many people won’t notice a single change. Perhaps that is a good thing.

The NFC North as of late has been one of the most competitive divisions in football, with all four teams vying for playoff berths each year. This makes things more complicated for the Lions, who have to play each of these teams twice during the year, and makes winning the North far from a foregone conclusion. So, how has each team in the North fared this offseason, and what does it mean for the Lions? Let’s take a peek.

Green Pay Packers

Departures: Desmond Ridder, Clayton Tune, Malik Willis, Emanuel Wilson, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks, John FitzPatrick, Rasheed Walker, Elgton Jenkins, Colby Wooden, Kingsley Enagbare, Rashan Gary, Quay Walker, Trevon Diggs, Nate Hobbs, Brandon McManus

Additions (free-agents, non draft): Tyron Taylor, Skyy Moore, Sean Rhyan, Javon Hargrave, Zaire Franklin, Isaiah McDuffie (extension), Benjamin St-Juste.

Draft Picks: Brandon Cisse, Chris McClellan, Dani Dennis-Sutton, Jager Burton, Domani Jackson, Trey Smack

The Packers are at an interesting inflection point in their franchise trajectory. I would argue they have put a lot of trust in Jordan Love both in his physical health and ability to play the QB position. On the health side, he has had to rely on Willis multiple times prior, and Taylor (while decent to good) is a downgrade from Willis. Add in the fact that beyond Love, there has been a complete turnover of the QB room, so the players Love is talking to and breaking down film with will be starkly different.

I like the addition of Skyy Moore, I’ve always been a fan of his. Javon Hargrave and Zaire Franklin make a ton of sense with the defensive coordinator change and the move to a 3-4 base defense. I think the loss of Doubs will be bigger, though, than some people are giving it credit for. Same with Rashan Gary. Oh and the Packers have quietly established the best tight end room in the north.

The final question is what is going on with Josh Jacobs and his legal troubles. As the Packers really have not established a plan B behind him. They are very thin at RB.

I’ve said this before, the Packers scare me more than any other team in the north. They have the best chance to be dominant. That said, with all the changes in coaching, administration, and players, a lot will have to fall into line for that dominance to surface.

Chicago Bears

The Bears are coming off of a good season, with an asterisk. That asterisk is luck. A lot of things that happened were the result of a proverbial coin flip going the Bears way, and that is simply not sustainable. The Bears simply need to clean that up by becoming better at the basics, and I think they will, but I think they will still fall back down to earth and regress some.

From the roster side, they’ve done a pretty nice job at making up for the players they lost. I would argue they lost a bit more than they gained. For instance adding Kalif Raymond and losing DJ Moore. DJ Moore is the more talented player, but Raymond (as we all know) is no slouch and can provide a deep threat that will pair well with Moore (not to mention his return abilities).

The Bears are less scary to me. I think they depend too much on luck. Ben Johnson will put a quality product out there though, the Lions simply have to overcome it, and I think they will. Final note: I was going to stay a little bit away from draft picks as none are guaranteed, but I do think the Bears got a stud in Dillon Thieneman, and that he makes up for some safety departures.

Minnesota Vikings

Draft Picks: Caleb Banks, Jake Golday, Domonique Orange, Caleb Tiernan, Jakobe Thomas, Max Bredeson, Charles Demmings, Demond Claiborne, Gavin Gerhardt

I’m sorry, I don’t see it at all with the Vikings this year, to put it bluntly. While Kevin McConnell has a track record of making QBs come back from oblivion, he has his work cut out with him with an undisciplined Kyler Murray at the helm. Carson Wentz isn’t going to be able to help for more than a game or two if called upon, as he collects injuries like Pokémon cards. Aaron Jones is aging and starting to show it. Jonathan Greenard and Javon Hargrave leaving are huge losses (Brian Flores will do Brian Flores things, though). All in all, the Vikings got a lot worse. Period.

What Does This Mean for the Lions?

The Lions don’t have a cake walk to win the NFC north. I expect them to win at least 12 games and they’re going to need them all.

The Packers are going to fight hard each time the Lions play them. As long as Love is healthy and Josh Jacobs is around, it’s going to be a ground out, hard fought battle. With their TEs and Taylor they still may even be able to put on a hard fought battle. The Lions should not underestimate the Packers, and will need their A game to sweep them.

The Bears will also fight hard each time, but the games I expect to be different. Caleb Williams’ luck will run out and ego will run high. Stay vigilant, capitalize on Williams’ mistakes, and don’t turn the ball over, and the Bears games are winnable. I didn’t say easy, I just said winnable.

I expect the Vikings offense to be a mess and the defense to play hard. I could get bit by this take, perhaps a change of scenery is what Murray needs. That said, I don’t think it will come together, and the Lions will sweep the Vikings, as they plummet to 4th in the NFC North.

The Lions rookies are set to arrive in Allen Park on July 25, marking the start of Training Camp for the 2026 season! The Lions have done a nice job of building younger depth in an attempt to avert injury and push their team towards the ultimate goal: The Super Bowl. As we head into Training Camp, let’s go over a few players to keep an eye on and see if they can help push the Lions in the right direction!

Isiah Pachecho

With Gibbs primed for a bigger role in 2026, Pacheco will not have as much on his plate as he has in previous years. This leads to an interesting opportunity as he also will be much more fresh when he does see the field. Watch for Pachecho and how he fits into the backfield, specifically how he does when he is asked to block, or when he actually is able to rush. Perhaps we will even get to see Gibbs and Pacheco in the backfield together, something I know a lot of fans would appreciate.

Christian Mahogany

Left Guard is arguably the only potentially open spot on the Lions offensive line. If Mahogany can return to form now that he is healthy, he will be the unquestioned starter. However the likes of Juice Scruggs, Miles Frazier, and Ben Bartch look to push him for that spot. Perhaps this is more a case of watching the left guard spot as a whole versus watching Christian Mahogany himself. In my opinion we all should be hoping Mahogany returns to form, as he represents the best possibility for the Lions offensive line.

Christian Izien

Christian Izien is such an underrated signing. He can play at safety, he can swing into the nickel corner spot, it wouldn’t surprise me if they brought him down and had him play linebacker in coverage. Izien should help with the questions around Branch and Joseph, and if he performs he could solve my biggest question around the Lions defense. In OTAs Izien spent a lot of time at safety, look for him to begin there, and perhaps be a key contributor in that spot. That said, he could really be lined anywhere, and that versatility could help the Lions defense in a big way.

Roger McCreary

With the loss of Terrion Arnold, I can’t help but wonder if McCreary will find his way around the field a bit more. He not only has nickel experience, but experience outside. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: everyone thought that Amik Robertson would only be our nickel, but he was much more. Hopefully we will see the same out of McCreary, and he can help to firm up the Lions defensive back room.

Jimmy Rolder

Jimmy Rolder was one of the bigger surprises around OTAs. I would argue he showed more ball awareness than most expected, and showed that he was ready for the NFL. However that is all fine and good when you are playing in pajamas. However, if the pads come on and Rolder shows that same level of competitiveness, we might have a linebacker controversy brewing for one of the depth linebacker spots.

This is such a great time of year to watch as the roster comes together, and to embrace the hope! If 3 of these 5 players can become key contributors to the Detroit Lions, we will be in a much better spot, and I am excited to see if that happens.

Back in May, at the time of the Lions schedule drop, I predicted how I thought the Lions would do this year. However, since this post, a lot has changed. OTAs have come and gone, some players’ stock has risen and others have dropped. Some players have departed the Lions. Let’s revisit and review what I had to say before, and provide some adjustments!

Week One - New Orleans Saints - Home

What I said in May: The Saints have struggled in years past. While there are some analysts that seem to think they have turned a corner, and that they have their franchise quarterback in the building. I am not one of them. I believe the Lions are without question the more complete team, and no combination of Tyler Shough, Zach Wilson, and Spencer Rattler is going to convince me otherwise. The Lions also have a great home advantage. Give me the Lions in this one.

What I think now: I am starting to come around to the idea that the Saints might actually have made some positive changes and may be a competitive team this year. However, I still think the Lions are in a better spot and thus still believe the Lions will win. This may prove to be a more competitive match than previously thought though.

Week Two - Buffalo Bills - Away

What I said in May: The Buffalo Bills are a tough matchup no matter which way you hash it. Yes, they do have a new head coach. However this is not the only change at play here. The Buffalo Bills will also be breaking in their new stadium in primetime. Add in the Lions short turnaround for a Thursday night game. I simply think that the cards are stacked against the Lions in this one: Give me the Buffalo Bills.

What I think now: Not much to change here. The Bills are still a tough matchup. I think this almost comes down to a coin flip. But the turnaround is still tough. I have to stick with a Lions loss here.

Week Three - New York Jets - Home

What I said in May: The prodigal son Aaron Glenn returns to Detroit against a well rested Lions team. I will say that I believe the Jets have a good possibility of taking a step in the right direction this year. Perhaps they will start their launch into being a competitive team. However, there is not enough there to overcome the Lions talent and homefield advantages. Give me the Lions.

What I think now: The Jets seem to be stuck in purgatory, and nothing they have done in this offseason is going to push them out of this rut. I’ll stick with the Lions.

Week Four - Carolina Panthers - Away

What I said in May: I think most people would agree with me when I say that the Panthers are ascending. With young players like Bryce Young, Tetaiora McMillian, and Ikem Ekwomu they likely have a bit more to grow yet. However the Lions are also young, and have more proven talent than the Panthers do. Give me the Lions.

What I think now: The more I read about the Panthers, the more it sounds like their defense actually has improved considerably. We are at week four and the Lions sit at 2-1, but they have to go into an opposing field to get the win. I think this is one of those tight games that comes down to the wire, and the Panthers show they are building something. I am going to switch my answer to the Panthers, as I am beginning to think some people may be sleeping too much on them.

Week Five - Arizona Cardinals - Away

What I said in May: The Cardinals lost their previous franchise quarterback to free agency (for better, or for worse). While they have plenty of capable talent on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, you have to score points in order to win. I don’t see the combination of Jacoby Brisset, Gardner Minshew, and Carson Beck providing those points. I truly think that the Lions new OC Drew Petzing was a lot of the reason Jacoby did as well as he did last year with the Cardinals. Give me the Lions.

What I think now: I’m sorry, the Cardinals are in a bad place. I don’t think they are going to do much of anything this year. Jacoby Brisset isn’t it, i’ll stick with the Lions.

Week Six - Bye Week

What I said in May: The Lions get an early bye. I never like early bye weeks. I always find myself pining for an extra week for players to get healthy down the stretch. Perhaps the changes the Lions have made will help them stay healthy down the stretch, but I still would prefer this come later.

What I think now: I’ve actually listened to a number of folks preach statistics that seem to suggest bye week placement doesn’t matter. No win or loss here, but perhaps the early bye isn’t a bad thing. Hopefully the Lions can come back ready to play, because the next two games are quite important.

Week Seven - Green Bay Packers - Home

What I said in May: Am I the only one who seems to think that the Packers lost more than they gained this offseason thus far? I am just not seeing this plan work out for them. However, I also know that the Lions have historically played poorly coming out of the bye under Dan Campbell. I unfortunately think the rust overcomes the Lions here, and they are handed their first home loss of the season. Give me the (*gulp*) Packers.

What I think now: Well the Josh Jacobs saga is an unknown, and he very much may be suspended at this point. There are questions on the Packers offensive line. Jordan Love is a good QB, so there’s that, but they also won’t have any of Micah Parsons at this point. I am going to flip this, give me the Lions with an important division win.

Week Eight - Minnesota Vikings - Home

What I said in May: I also don’t see what the Vikings are doing. The loss of Jonathan Greenard is a big one. I am not a Kyler Murray fan. Who knows what is going to happen with JJ McCarthy. Aaron Jones is at the ripe old running-back age of thirty one. TJ Hockenson has not looked the same as of late. Want me to go on? The Lions roar back into form at home. Give me the Lions.

What I think now: The Vikings have given me no reason to change my pick. I fully expect the Vikings to be the worst team in the NFC North, I’ll stick with the Lions with another important division win.

Week Nine - Miami Dolphins - Away

What I said in May: The Dolphins are in full blown rebuild mode. Tua is gone, and I don’t see Malik Willis as more than a high end backup quarterback. Now don’t get me wrong, they got some nice pieces in the draft. I am higher on Max Llewelyn than most, and think he may end up starting on one side or the other by the end of the season. However, I don’t see them being very good this year. Give me the Lions.

What I think now: Much like the Vikings, the Dolphins simply haven’t given me any reason to change my answer. No big name player acquisitions or trades. They have extended Achane, and added some journeyman players, but that doesn’t make much of a difference. Give me the Lions still.

Week Ten - New England Patriots - Home (Munich, Germany)

What I thought in May: The Patriots have been ascending as of late. I know, I know, the news that is floating around about Vrabel hasn’t been great. However, with the type of culture the Patriots have historically had, I don’t think that moves the needle. This is a very hard game. The Lions are on the road even though this is a “home” game. This is a hard one. I think there will be a good fan turnout too given St. Brown’s connection to Germany. This is a coin flip, so I flipped a coin and it came up in favor of the Lions. Give me the Lions.

What I think now: The Patriots have been embroiled in controversy this offseason. They have player talent, but is the culture strong enough right now to handle these issues? My thought is no, its not yet. This further cements my thought that the Lions win this one. I also still think the crowd is gonna be nuts for St. Brown.

Week Eleven - Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Home

What I thought in May: The Buccaneers and Lions have always fought each other hard as of late. Last year when the LIons played the Buccaneers it came down to how the “Legion of Whom” performed, and they were up for the task. Kelvin Sheppard has an arguably better group of defensive backs this year, though the injuries to Branch and Kerby leave question marks. I think this game will come down to the defensive back play of the Lions. To me this is another coin flip, and this time the Lions come out on the wrong side of the coin. Give me the Buccaneers.

What I think now: I’m seriously concerned about Kerby Joseph, and if he will make it this far in the season. I am concerned that Branch is not going to be himself. The Lions have built good depth, but there are problems. Add in the loss of Terrion and how Baker plays… I am going to unfortunately flip this to a Lions loss, but it should be a hard fought game.

Week Twelve - Chicago Bears - Home (Thanksgiving)

What I thought in May: The Lions have not performed well on Thanksgiving as of late. Last year the Lions had the Bears number. The season is getting close to the home stretch here and the Lions are going to want to show they can not only perform on Thanksgiving, but that Drew Petzing can call an offense that will rival Ben Johnson’s. The Lions deliver for the Home crowd and eat turkey legs on national television. Give me the Lions.

What I think now: I am more and more convinced that despite Ben Johnson’s formidable offense that Caleb Williams is going to fall back to earth, and that he will not have nearly as many 50/50 plays go his way. The amount of luck the Bears had is not tenable in the long term. I’ll stick with the Lions.

Week Thirteen - Atlanta Falcons - Away

What I thought in May: The Falcons are building something, and I think they might be on their way back to being a consistently good team. We may know this for sure by week thirteen. However, I still think that the Lions are the more complete team at this point. Give me the Lions.

What I think now: Not much has changed here. Dakre London is under contract through 2030 now. I think they very well could be competitive, but I am still gonna say give me the Lions.

Week Fourteen - Tennessee Titans - Home

What I thought in May: I just don’t see what the Titans are building. When you look at some teams that have been on the lower end of the spectrum as of late, you can see what they are trying to do clearly. I don’t see it here, I really don’t. I think this is an easy win. Give me the Lions.

What I think now: The same. Easy win. Give me the Lions.

Week Fifteen - Minnesota Vikings - Away

What I thought in May: While I do think that the Vikings are not going to be great this year (in fact I think they will be firmly at the bottom of the division), I think that home field advantage will play a big part in this game. The gap between contending in this league and not contending in this league is a slim one. I think the Vikings and Lions split. Give me the Vikings.

What I think now: The Vikings will always be competitive, but as I alluded to earlier, I think they are going to be the last place team in the NFC North. I just get the feeling that they will fight, but they will lose. Also, the Lions are out for blood with the Vikings after Christmas last year. Give me the Lions.

Week Sixteen - New York Giants - Home

What I thought in May: The Giants have a new head coach, and time will only tell if this marriage between John Harbaugh and the Giants is a good thing. We are getting down the stretch and the Lions are going to feel the pressure to finish strong. The Giants will be playing in a new system, and it’s hard to remember a time where Harbaugh wasn’t a Raven. This one is hard to say, but give me the Lions due to home field advantage.

What I think now: I’m starting to wonder if the Giants will actually figure it out. Cam Skattebo needs to be careful with his health, but if he is healthy in this game this could end up being a bit of a shoot out. Being able to run will open up the field for Nabers. Slayton still can do things, and Likely is here too. I’m going to flip this one in a hard fought battle. Give me the Giants.

Week Seventeen - Chicago Bears - Away

What I thought in May: The Bears are a good team. Ben Johnson has built something good in Chicago. What I thought at first was Ben just trying to mimic Dan has turned into something that the league respects. Ben Johnson is not mimicking, I think his players would have sniffed that out by now. Caleb Wiliams also has a ton of tools. While the Lions have had the Bears number as I stated above, I’m giving this one once again to home field advantage. Give me the Bears.

What I think now: See my comments above regarding the luck of the Bears. The Bears fall back to earth. Give me the Lions.

Week Eighteen - Green Bay Packers - Away

What I thought in May: The bitter cold of Lambeau is upon us once again in week eighteen. However, coming off a stinging loss against the Bears, the Lions are motivated to end the season on a positive note and roar into the playoffs. The Lions win in convincing fashion, and bring their record to twelve and five. I believe this will not only be good enough to make the playoffs, but to clinch the NFC North. Raise the banner high my friends. I predict the Lions are NFC North champions, and are hot heading into the post season.

The more I think about it, the more I think this schedule is deceivingly dangerous. Do I think this could be the reality of what happens? Absolutely. However the amount of “coin flips” I saw makes this easy to tilt either way. I have confidence in the changes the Lions have made though, and I stand by my prediction that they will be NFC North champions.

What I think now: Raise that banner, a Lions victory and a sweep of the NFC north opponents.

With the recent loss of Terrion Arnold, one of the two outside corner spots on the Lions roster is now open. In filling this open spot, that likely creates a hole of some sort elsewhere on the roster. I found myself talking with S&B contributor MCBC about this exact topic, and realized there are a lot more options than one might consider. Let’s dig in and answer the question, should the Lions add another Cornerback?

First and Foremost: All is Not Lost at Cornerback

As I outlined in a previous article, the drop off from Terrion Arnold to Rock Ya-Sin at outside cornerback isn’t as steep as a lot of us would like to think. Now, don’t get me wrong, Arnold’s ceiling was leaps and bounds above Ya-Sin’s. However, right out of the box we can promote a reserve corner to a starting spot without a massive drop off. What I have read a lot of though (and what MCBC expressed to be) is a lot of Lions fans are not ok with this being the only answer at cornerback.

In-House Options at Outside Cornerback

Let’s start here. What true in-house options do we have at cornerback? Have they started before? I am going to exclude Khalil Dorsey, Nick Whiteside, De’Shawn Rucker, and Amaris Brown as I personally don’t see their path to the outside spot unless they take a considerable step forward.

Rock Ya-Sin
Age: 30
Games Started: 45 games over 7 years

Ya-Sin is the most no nonsense answer. He fits this defense very well. He has played well in this defense. He is a calming veteran presence. While he may not be your prototypical playmaker, you would have a more prototypical playmaker in DJ Reed on the other side of the field. He also has been generally healthy, and comes into this season health and ready to go. The biggest downside that I see when I look over his stat sheet is that he seems to have next to no ball hawking skills as he has only intercepted two balls in his 7 year career.

Roger McCreary
Age: 26
Games Started: 38 games over 4 years

McCreary projected to be the starting nickel corner (pending competition) and is a newcomer to the Lions defense. He is once again a veteran presence on the field, which is a good thing. The key is though, he has played outside before and done so relatively successfully. He did have a brief stint on IR last year, but that has not been his norm. The biggest downside I see here is system inexperience and potentially leaving the nickel corner spot open.

Ennis Rakestraw
Age: 24
Games Started: 0 over 2 years

On paper, before the pads come on, Rakestraw probably has the most appeal for the other outside position. He is young, and stylistically matches what Terrion Arnold provided to the Lions. He could be a great option if he could stay on the field. It is well publicized that he has worked on building muscle and changing his body type to prevent injury, but that unfortunately means nothing until we see him stay healthy. I do hope that he can be the answer, but as I have said before, hope is not a strategy.

Keith Abney II
Age: 21 years old
Games Started: 0 (rookie)

Trusting a rookie is always a flip of a coin. You never know how quickly they are going to acclimate to the NFL. That said, while many look at Keith Abney as a slot only corner, he played the majority of his time on the outside in college. Furthermore, his height is often pointed to as a concern. Once upon a time I would have echoed this concern. However, Amik Robertson changed my mind as to what a short corner can do on the outside. Abney is the most high risk, high reward player to put at the other outside position but I kind of like the idea … a lot.

Who Would I Start In House?

This is a tough one, but common sense has to win out. I would start Rock Ya-Sin given his experience starting and in the Lions defense. The Lions offense (which looks looks like it may be coming back to form) has dragged the corpse of a defense into the playoffs before, so having a lesser corner on the outside isn’t as big of an issue as some may think (though not ideal). One side note though, I would make sure to have Rakestraw or Abney backup Ya-Sin. Start training one of the younger guys to be able to potentially step in and break out should Ya-Sin go down. My money would be on Abney here.

Free Agent Options at Outside Cornerback

Well… the cupboard is a bit bare here. I was a fan of kicking the tires on Rasul Douglas but he has since signed with the Commanders. Let’s do some quick hits on who is available.

Marshawn Lattimore - 30 years old

Good experience, but concerns on character, and has had a considerable drop off in play with age. Expensive contract likely (8.4 million a year projected by Spotrac).

Trevon Diggs - 28 years old

Good experience, but play has dropped off considerably after a very short 2023 season. Injury issues. Expensive contract likely (7.5 million a year projected by Spotrac).

Kenny Moore - 30 years old

Slot corner. While play has dropped off, it has not done so quite as hard as other players in this group. Middle of the road player. Per Spotrac he should command around 5.6 million a year.

Tre’Davious White - 31 years old

Primarily man corner. Injury issues. Has fallen off some even when healthy.

Who Would I Start From Available Free Agents?

To put it bluntly, no one. I mean if you want to risk another character problem and overpay, maybe Lattimore? The most appealing to me is Tre’Davious White, but that would be for depth. Oh, and oft injured players are something that the Lions are very apparently avoiding, so that is very unlikely.

In Conclusion: Should the Lions Add Another Cornerback?

At the end of the day, I am comfortable with who we have in the building. However, I think the Lions do need to be keeping an eye on players on other teams. Perhaps players who may have non “red flag” issues such as scheme mismatches and culture misfits. Players who may be cost prohibitive to other teams. I don’t see this happening in a trade, but rather towards roster cutdown days. There’s always a diamond out there, Brad just has to go out and find it.

Training camp for the Detroit Lions will kick off at the beginning of August. There is a lot we don’t know until the pads go on. However, OTAs gave us a small (and limited) glimpse into the state of talent and the roster. Today, I’ll give you my prediction as to where the roster will end up at the end of training camp. Let’s dig in!

Some people may think that this outcome is a foregone conclusion. Some people may think the Lions will carry three quarterbacks. I don’t think either of these perspectives will come to fruition. I actually was very close to calling Altmyer in and Bridgewater out, simply because Bridgewater has some rust on him and Luke Altmyer is stylistically closer to Jared Goff than Bridgewater is. That allows for continuity of the offense. However Bridgewater’s experience wins out. I still think Altmyer sticks around, I just think he is on the practice squad.

Now, hear me out on this one. Jahmyr is your bellcow back. Isaiah Pacheco should be a great change of pace back, and with a lighter workload he should be able to stay more healthy. Sione Vaki is who complicates things, he is an excellent special teamer with limited RB experience. Not having a backup plan for him would be a huge oversight. Thus, I am keeping Jacob Saylers as he has more “real world” experience with his time in the UFL.

This is potentially the easiest of the groups. The top four spots are almost set in stone. I have heard from multiple people that Dortch looked great in camp, and really fits what the Lions want at WR4. Tom Kennedy has proven no matter when you put him in, he will produce at a WR5 level consistently. Malik Cunningham has the upside and ability. The rest are all too unknown. Don’t get me wrong, the WR6 competition could bust open and someone could overtake Cunningham, but this is where I see it until we have more evidence to the contrary.

Borom and Scruggs provide experienced veteran presence to step in in a pinch. I really like this re-vamped group.

The hardest thing for me was cutting Wingo and Hassanein as I think they both could still be something, I hope to see them both on the practice squad. I also hope we can see Payton Turner for more than a half a game.

Rolder showed flashes in OTAs per multiple sources (it’s almost like Brad hits on picks now and then). Let me state: I really like Hunter and he is locked up for a couple years, he could stick. I feel like Nowaske may have hit his ceiling. Bachie could stick as veteran depth. There certainly is room to move here, but this is what I see as of now.

Dorsey and Whiteside are hard cuts for me but I think Abney and Izien cost them their spots.

Strickland and Harper likely end up on the practice squad. The only reason I am comfortable with this light in a safety room is Christian Izien can jump in and play safety as well.

This is the most solid and unquestioned group on the roster, and here’s hoping it stays that way.

The Crystal Ball has Spoken

Let’s all be honest. This is guess work at best. It is fun to dive into our roster, and I do have to give Holmes credit. The depth and positive turnover on this roster looks really good on paper. The only room I am really concerned about is the DB room between safeties, and perhaps adding another vet corner. We shall see what the Lions ultimately decide to do, and what the product on the field ultimately looks like.

With the recent release of Terrion Arnold, the Lions 2024 draft class is coming under increased scrutiny. Even before the release of Arnold, a lot of fans (rightfully so) questioned if this class was a complete bust. Let’s take some time to revisit each pick and rank them to see, is it a bust or is that premature? Let’s dive in, and tank each player with one of the following (all ranks relative to draft position):

Bust - This player will no longer provide any value to the Lions and for all intents and purposes was a miss.

On the Fence - This player has shown flashes, provides value only in one specific area, or has too small a sample size to make a call if they are good or bad.

Solid - Just like the name says, this player has provided solid contributions to the team, perhaps starting, in heavy rotation, and not riding the bench every game. They are not a stud by any means, but they are quality.

Stud - No question, this player is quality. Starts, and likely will continue to do so for some time.

Now that we have the rankings, let’s dig in.

The Picks

Round One, Pick 24: Terrion Arnold

Let’s keep this focused on the field, as we don’t need to re-hash Arnold’s legal troubles. Arnold was able to step in quickly and start playing, appearing in 16 games his first season and eight his second. He notched one interception, eighteen passes deflected, and 70 solo tackles (per Pro Football Reference). However, he did all of this while committing a ton of penalties and having a level of inconsistency to his game. He also was unavailable for half of his second season with the Lions.

Put it all together: character issues, penalties, injuries, and an early release and it’s not pretty. I was all for this pick at the time, with the recent release of Cam Sutton. However, I think it’s only fair that this pick be declared a BUST.

Round Two, Pick 61: Ennis Rakestraw

I was so excited when we double dipped at cornerback. Watching us play how we had the previous year, I really wanted to see what he had to offer and how he could elevate our game. I still do. He is not a first round pick but he does fit what the Lions do nicely. He just needs to see the field more consistently. That, my friends, is the story of Rakestraw thus far: injuries and

availability. While I am excited that he has added bulk in 2026 to hopefully prevent further injury, that is no guarantee. The only thing that will make me truly confident is to see him play the majority (if not all) of a season.

Up the sample size, stay healthy, and then we can talk. I think we have to rank this ON THE FENCE. However, I’m really really close to calling him a bust. If he can’t bring in a productive (and relatively healthy season) this year, he’s off to being labeled a bust.

Round Four: Pick 126: Giovanni Manu

Draft day is exciting for me, and this one is one of my favorite types of picks generally. The no name player with a high athletic ceiling who we get without spending premium draft capital. I have to admit though, it surely appears I was wrong to be excited about this one. Coming into the NFL with such a low end skillset has left Manu woefully behind his teammates in his abilities. I would rather have Larry Borom out there instead of Giovanni Manu to put it bluntly, and this is from a guy I wanted to succeed. I wanted him to catch on and take over Taylor Decker’s spot.

The final straw was the Lions trying him at guard in minicamp. This isn’t about them wanting to give him more opportunities to do good things or be versatile, no. This is about trying to squeeze some value out of this prospect who certainly appears to have been overdrafted.

He’s a BUST.

Round Four: Pick 132: Sione Vaki

You don’t always get immediate contributors in the fourth round, however Vaki has provided proven value. First and foremost, he is a quality special teamer and has been able to consistently find the field in that regard. That is more valuable than a lot of the guys on this page, so lets give credit there.

Secondly, he is sliding into a battle this year for RB3 with Jacob Saylers of UFL fame. For a fourth round pick, this falls in line with the mid to lower end of one I would expect. Especially one who played so very little running back in college. Final note: He has played safety, not that he would be good, but he may provide versatility there in a pinch. In theory he has value to provide in all three phases of the game (offense, defense, special teams),

Due to consistent special teams contribution lets give Vaki a SOLID.

Round Six: Pick 189: Mekhi Wingo

Wingo has had trouble finding the field even when the team has been decimated by injury. When he has been out there he hasn’t wowed me personally in any way. Perhaps he still can do something, but he has played in 13 games over two seasons and really just has not found his footing. I wish I could provide more than that, but I think that’s all there is to provide really. Later round picks are always big question marks, and the Lions took a swing on Wingo. He still has a chance, but he needs to improve fast or he will no longer be a Lion, perhaps as early as 2026.

Not enough for me to be on the fence with him, give me a BUST. Let’s hope he follows in the tracks of players like Ifeatu Melifonwu who took until their third season with the lions to blossom into what Dan and Brad saw in them (I’m not holding my breath).

Round Six: Pick 210: Christian Mahogany

Mahogany might be the one real bright spot of this draft. First, the value is undeniable. Now, I know he is not perfect. However, coming into 2026 he finds himself the entrenched starter at left guard, now playing next to arguably the best offensive tackle in football on his left, and an upgraded center on his right. He was a bit down last year, but the whole line was. He has shown he can hold down a starting spot on this line, and with an upgraded line he is set up to ascend.

I can’t give him a top ranking, I think there needs to be a bit more. However, let’s call him a SOLID.

The Verdict Is…

3 Busts, 2 Solids, 1 On the Fence (due to sample size). We have hit the fifty percent mark of busts out of this draft and the rest are far from guarantees to become studs. Let me be clear: Brad Holmes has been much better than anyone we have seen at GM in some time since he has arrived. I am 100% on the Brad Holmes wagon. However, even the best people have an off performance now and then at their job. I think that’s what we see here: Brad had a bad performance.

It would take a lot to make this class a functional success, and it’s all very unlikely to occur in reality. It’s for that reason that I do believe the Lions 2024 draft class is a bust. I expect Mahogany will stick around, and perhaps Vaki. I have hope for Rakestraw (and we need him now), but hope is not a strategy. Thus, we close the book on the 2024 draft class for now, and hope that we can get some value out of the players that remain.

Healing Up, Primed for the Comeback

Let me tell you, it’s good to be writing to you all again. As you may or may not be aware (or have noticed), I have not been posting at my normal cadence over the last 4 weeks. This is due to some significant medical issues that came up quickly and rendered me unable to focus and do the needed work to put out quality content for you all. I would just like to say thank you for continuing to visit my content and for reaching out. I am doing better, and will hopefully be fully healed soon. That said, let’s dig right back in where we left off and catch up on some Lions news!

Terrion Arnold

By now, you all know what has happened with Terrion Arnold, arguably the Lions number one cornerback. If you don’t know, I’ll give you a nutshell:

Terrion Arnold was arrested on June 30 on multiple felony counts of kidnapping and armed robbery. This all stems back to a party allegedly stealing a large amount of items and money from Arnold. Arnold allegedly coordinated and perhaps viewed/influenced a group of individuals retaliating against the (alleged) perpetrators. All in all, it’s a mess. At Arnold’s hearing the judge did allow him to be released on one million dollars bond, but did find probable cause for Arnold to be charged. Shortly thereafter the Lions released Terrion Arnold.

There have been a lot of takes on this. I will leave mine here: I recall Arnold being reported with no character concerns coming out of college. We all know Holmes did his due diligence. However, money changes people, and perhaps he fell in with a bad crowd. I am rooting for (first and foremost) Arnold to only be charged with what is appropriate (Lion or not), and I hope the young man gets his life together. However, the Lions made the right move in releasing him, and are sticking to their guns when it comes to severe legal troubles and character concerns. They previously did this with Cam Sutton, and it shows consistency in their stance. Keep your nose clean and you’ve got no problems.

Finally, Coach Campbell stated sometime ago in the offseason that Arnold had communicated to him that this legal trouble was essentially a non issue. My understanding is the Lions seem to feel as though they were lied to, and that likely played into his release.

So the Terrion Arnold days are over, and the 2024 draft class goes down as one of Brad Holmes worst (though some of those players may still rebound and become something).

Rock Ya-Sin

So, hear me out. I do think the Lions need to add an additional quality corner to their cornerback room (we will come back to that) with the release of Arnold. However, I think it’s important to understand that Rock Ya-Sin was not playing that far off of Arnolds’s level last year. In fact, Pro Football Focus states that Ya-Sin was better statistically than Arnold (graphics below per PFF). While PFF grades aren’t great at giving nuance to how a player plays, I think they are a good higher level assessment.

Ya-Sin had double the snaps (roughly) of Terrion, and logged one more pass breakup. He was ranked the 57th corner by PFF grade in 2025, as opposed to Arnold who was rated 97th. Ya-Sin also graded out better on solo tackles, receptions allowed, and missed tackles. He may not have the ceiling, but he was a big reason that the Lions continued to do anything on defense in 2025. So, while this isn’t ideal, I think we need to back the panic train up and simply consider the stats.

Keith Abney and Roger McCreary

I’ll keep this point brief. Keith Abney projects to be a nickel in the NFL and should have been picked higher than he was. He has looked good thus far in minicamp (albeit without pads). Roger McCreary looked like he was going to be our nickel, but it is important to state that he has experience playing outside in the NFL. I remember another cornerback that the Lions defensive staff brought in that played some outside but was looked at as a nickel: Amik Robertson. No one thought much of the signing when we picked him up either, and he turned out to be really good. I’m not saying McCreary is Robertson, all I am saying here is let the Lions defensive staff cook a bit with the ingredients they have. They may have the pieces to hold this together.

However… Bring in the Reinforcements

I have to give Mike Payton from A to Z sports credit for planting this idea in my head, but I think the Lions should consider bringing in Rasul Douglas. Rasul Douglas was statistically better than both Arnold and Ya-Sin last year when playing for the Dolphins of all teams (one can only go up I suppose). He is 30 years old, and could likely be had on a 1 year, 4 million dollar-ish contract with perhaps 2 or 3 million guaranteed, so he is affordable. This immediately adds depth as well, with the potential for him to play outside, start, and be a stable veteran presence in a defensive back room that has some issues.

Sam LaPorta Contract and Trade Rumors

On the offensive side of the ball, Sam LaPorta has been coming up a lot as of late. For a variety of reasons. He is coming off of his back surgery, he is due a contract, and there have been a lot of rumors from bigger outlets that he might be traded. However, let’s not put the cart before the horse, and break down the simple facts.

• LaPorta is unproven right now after his back injury and likely brings diminished trade value because of that, I am inclined to think this would be a reason the Lions won’t trade him.

• LaPorta is a safety valve that Goff trusts. Period. The drop off when he got injured was palpable. This also inclines me to think he won’t be traded.

• Last year, major outlets said Kirby Joseph was a potential trade target. About this time of year, when news is slow (go figure). This further inclines me to think LaPorta won’t be traded.

• Finally, on the contract side, the Lions have not seen LaPorta take a single padded snap since his surgery. I highly doubt they are going to give him a contract until they have tested him out a bit and feel good that he will not regress.

To sum it up. I don’t think LaPorta is being traded or given a new contract right now. I think if he holds up he could get a contract mid-season.

Tyler Conklin

Finally, with the questions about LaPorta, it’s easy to wonder what is going on with Tyler Conklin. Well if you think back to OTAs you may recall he exited with an injury. During minicamp he was absent with no explanation. While I would label this curious, it could simply be that they didn’t want to aggravate something, or didn’t see value in putting stress on the body of the over 30 tight end. There’s no reason to panic until we know more on this front.

Wrapping Up

We are entering into the quiet time of the season. Training camp starts August 2 (July 21 is when tickets become available if you are interested). I don’t expect a ton of Lions news beyond perhaps adding a veteran corner, or trading for one. However, we will have plenty to dig into here at Silver & Blues! 34 days until the Hall of Fame game (Panthers and Cardinals)!

The Lions continue to add competition for the bottom end of their wide receiving room with the signing of Lawrence Keys. Let’s take a quick dive on Keys’ accomplishments in the world of football.

College

Keys’ spent 2019-2021 with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. None of his numbers were eye popping (18 receptions / 185 yards and no touchdowns, 10 kick returns, 3 punt returns). However, when he moved over to Tulane in 2022 and 2023, he grew as a player. He saw an uptick in receiving and returning (63 receptions / 895 yards / 9 touchdowns, 23 kick returns for 698 yards and an average of 26.8 yards).

NFL

This section will be a bit lacking. Keys’ signed as an undrafted free agent with the Buffalo Bills, but never recorded a stat in the NFL.

UFL

The UFL is where Keys found his footing. He played in 8 games in 2025, bringing in 17 receptions for 179 yards. In 2026 he got even better hauling in 24 receptions for 349 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also had 8 punt returns in 2025 (13.6 yard average), 10 punt returns in 2026 (12.2 yard average), 20 kick returns in 2025 (21.2 average), and 19 kick returns in 2026 (27.3 average).

Something I didn’t say in my last article regarding UFL players, is that I think they almost have to have a “grit” mentality. The UFL is not private jets and big paychecks, it is a developmental league of sorts. Keys’ could have chosen to leave the game when he didn’t catch on anywhere as any undrafted free agent. However, he chose to keep playing.

Athletic Profile

Keys’ Athletic profile is highlighted by his speed, specifically short area speed, though he is no slouch in a long field either (4.54 40 yard). He has a pretty decent short shuttle from his Pro Day at 4.32. All in all he has ok to good agility and good to great speed.

Lions Fit

I see one fit and one fit only for Keys’ personally, if he were to stick he would be a lesser version of what the Lions were wanting out of Kendrick Law. I would venture a guess he will fight to make the team for kick and punt returns, and could be a similar type of rb/wr combination that many expected Law to fill. However, with the likes of Greg Dortch and Tom Kennedy to fight with for kick and punt returns, he will also need to be a special teams contributor to catch on.

Only time will tell what happens, the Lions are certainly setting up a competition in training camp, and bringing in some of the best talent in the UFL to do so.

Following the injury of Kendrick Law the Lions churned their roster a bit and signed Kyre Duplessis. However, they were not yet done. The Lions have churned their roster a bit more. The Lions have released wide receiver Kyre Duplessis and added wide receivers Tay Martin, Lucky Jackson, and Tarik Black (the latter two receivers of the UFL champion Louisville Kings). Contract details were not yet apparent for any of the signings. Let’s dig in and see what the Lions have added.

Tay Martin

Tay Martin is by far the most experienced receiver of the group. He comes from a five year collegiate career (at Washington State and Oklahoma State), amassing 2810 yards on 95 receptions and 10 touchdowns. He spent time with the 49ers, Titans, and Commanders as an undrafted free agent, logging 4 receptions for 72 yards. Martin’s athletic profile is good, but not great, with his short area quickness being his best trait.

Standing 6’3” and 186 lbs with NFL experience, Martin may have the easiest path to sticking with the Lions. His size being a key trait the Lions may look to add.

Lucky Jackson

Lucky Jackson spent 4 years at Western Kentucky, and had a productive career. Bringing in 210 receptions for 2691 yards, and 13 touchdowns in college. However, while he has played in three regular season games in the NFL (all for the Minnesota Vikings), he has yet to record a stat.

He did catch on with the Louisville Kings in the UFL, and was productive in doing so, logging 32 receptions for 392 yards, and 2 touchdowns.

Standing 6’0” and 186 lbs (the same is Tay Martin, weirdly enough), his calling card of athleticism is speed. He looks to have speed in the realm of a 4.42 40.

Tarik Black

Lions fans may know a little bit about Tarik Black. Black spent 3 years at Michigan and one at Texas bringing in 50 receptions for 747 yards and 3 touchdowns. While he did play one game for the Jets, he logged only one reception for 10 yards. His UFL career has been good this year, logging 27 receptions for 388 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Another tall receiver at 6’ 2”, with elite explosion grades, good speed, and good agility. There is no question Black is athletic enough for the NFL. The question is, can he use it to set himself apart from the pack of receivers on the Lions.

So what?

So what? There’s not a lot of promises for these guys coming into the Lions at this point. However, if we know anything about this team, it is that no matter what your draft position is, you have a chance to fight for a position. No matter if that is WR6, sole special teams contributor, or practice squad player.

If I had to choose one to watch, I would give it to Lucky Jackson. He is a bit older at 28, that’s true. But he doesn’t have a ton of wear on his body, and he has good speed. Kalif Raymond was one of the players that was able to stretch the field for the Lions, and he is no longer with the team. Jackson may be able to find a place stretching the field, and thus may be able to make the 53 man roster.

One final note, Dan Campbell has talked about how the Lions like UFL players as they have played on a “next level” stage. Might I remind you Jake Bates fought for a position on this team as a UFL standout. This just goes to show, if one of these young men can show out in camp, they certainly could have a place on the Lions roster.

Dan Campbell met with the media today ahead of day one of Mandatory Minicamp. While not a lot changed, listening to this press conference I think we saw a little more of the jovial and open coach Campbell that we have seen in previous years. Was he completely off the rails, and threatening to eat kneecaps? No, I think we’re past that. It was a different type of jovial though, more measured and approached. Let’s dig right in to the quick hits on what he had to say

On Players Being Held Out

Coach Campbell stated the “norms” would be held out, so it’s safe to assume Kirby, Branch, and LaPorta (somewhat). He did go on to state that LaPorta would be walking through but not at full speed.

On LaPorta’s Readiness for Training Camp

Coach Campbell stated “We like where he’s going, he’s trending the right way”. So it’s safe to assume no setbacks, and the Lions offense will likely have their top Tight End back in the fold for training camp.

On Rakestraw and Ya-Sin’s Illness

Coach Campbell stated both will be back and working for minicamp.

On Ben Bartch and the Offensive Line

Coach Campbell stated Ben Barch will be back for training camp.

Later on, Coach Campbell spoke at length about the battle at left guard:

“Listen, it’s open. Mahogany is very much in that. He played a couple of games for us in ‘24. Started for us until he had the injury, came back and started again. So we know he’s got ability, he’s got potential. [But] there’s a reason why we brought in Bartch, there’s a reason why Frazier is here, there’s a reason why all those guys are in there, we may try Manu a little bit. We’re gonna let this thing go and see what happens. And it will be good, it will be good for all of them. When you have someone nipping at your heels you’re constantly having to compete with and push, and you guys are all competing for the same thing, it’s good for everybody. Yeah he’s in the running. We expect him to compete, we expect him to put his best foot forward and play some of his best football.”

On the Competition Ramping Up

Coach Campbell didn’t depart from his stance that the real work comes when they get to training camp: “The competition has been good, it’s been good, you see what it’s going to be, what it can become going into training camp, it becomes live, real bullets are flying. That fires us up”

On Dan Jackson and Colby Sorsdahl

Coach Campbell didn’t offer ringing endorsements of either Jackson or Sorsdahl, but he didn’t put them down either. He did mention how Jackson stayed around and stayed in the playbook when he was injured, and how this would be his first real chance at real reps. He stated “our eyes are open” and that “He’s got to start playing now”

Specifically on Sorsdahl:

“He’s the same. He’s with the rest of those guys. Listen, our eyes are open. Every year whether it’s free agency or draft or any of these you’re acquiring competition. That’s really what you’re doing. And then obviously the more you invest in somebody, you feel like that’s probably the guy that’s going to take that spot. But that’s not a guarantee…”

On Personal Burnout

I have burned out, and I loved this question along the mental health and personal care vein. Coaching has to be one of the most demanding careers I have heard of. Coach Campbell opened up a bit on it:

“I try to be mindful of that, I try to get the work done but also be as smart as I can in the offseason. I feel like every year you’re a little more in tune with that and yourself. I’m not perfect about it. This job is consuming, but I love it, we love it. I’m sure most coaches will tell you that. It’s addictive, it’s consuming, that’s where you gotta be careful. I’ll have a chance to step away for a minute and you know, be ready to go”

He also was asked about a retreat the coaching staff took to Petosky, and while he didn’t provide many details, it sounds as though it was a welcome respite.

On Isaac TeSlaa

Coach Campbell perked up a bit when asked about how it seemed as though they tried to use TeSlaa more when Campbell took over play calling last year. He stated they simply wanted to get him going, just like Jamo, Saint, and Gibbs (paraphrasing). He did say they felt like there was “a lot more meat on the bone”. He stated furthermore that TeSlaa was not the issue last year, and that he is “steady” and “feels like a veteran now”.

We may want to keep an eye on this. It really sounded like TeSlaa may have even more chances coming his way in the Lions offense that already has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to pass catchers.

On Sione Vaki

Coach Campbell stated Vaki was “pound for pound he’s one of our best athletes”. But he says the running back side is raw. And a lot of that is injury. “He’s another guy, our eyes are open” If he helps them to move the ball, they will get him on the field.

Wrapping Up

The “eyes are open” quote was used a lot by Campbell today. This should be no surprise. It certainly sounds like it doesn’t matter who you are or what your draft stock is. If you show the ability, they will put you on the field. This is exactly what the Lions should be doing, not worrying about sunk costs, and worrying about results.

All in all not a ton to unpack, but in the middle of June, I think we will all take whatever football news we can get.

There is not much of a more divisive player from Brad Holmes’ tenure than Ennis Rakestraw. Why is he so divisive? To put it simply, his inability to see the field. Since being selected in the 2nd round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Rakestraw has managed to find the field in only 8 games. He has notched only 9 solo tackles. For a 2nd round pick, that’s nearly no return on investment. However, a glimmer of hope came out of Dan Campbell’s presser that got me thinking today…

Coach Campbell stated in regards to Rakestraw “He’s had a good spring… He’s been out there every day. This year he had a lot of time to really not only rehab but man work back there with [various strength and training staff]. He’s adding a little bit of bulk, he is a little more dense than he was. That’s always going to help the body. But there’s nothing to say, there’s nothing that will tell me that he won’t be prepared, and physically prepared to go into training camp.”

Normally, a single quote from Coach Campbell is nice, but we’ve heard him talk up guys before. He is a coach who builds people up, not tears them down. Generally you find his dissatisfaction in what he doesn’t say, not what he says. However, I think it’s important to note that while Terrion Arnold has finished up his rehab, “word on the street” is that Rakestraw has been repping with the first team.

Perhaps, just perhaps, Rakestraw sees the writing on the wall and has been putting in that extra work. Perhaps he has been showing that grit to get himself back into shape so he can stay on the field, and thus he is earning more reps. So, lets turn back the clock to Rakestraw’s college career and look at what the Lions saw in him when they drafted him (image below per College Football Reference)

You see, he is not an interception machine, but 79 solo tackles and 28 assists over 36 games isn’t terrible at all. Add in a number of TFLs (and/or getting into the back field). If I had to guess, I would bet the Lions picked him up for his ability to come up from coverage and make those tackles. To change on the fly and jump up to play the run. If he can find that, and can add some weight to make himself more available, there may be something here.

His athleticism shows good short line speed with a 1.52 10 yard split. Again, the ability to quickly come up from coverage and get to the tackle, this tracks. The rest of his athleticism is not terrible either, but the 10 yard split is where he separates himself. I think we can see what the Lions saw in him and how he fits their defense.

I’m sure you have all read and seen how I love a good underdog, and Rakestraw is no exception. However, why would I want him to fail? As a Lions fan I am always going to root for the unlikely injured player to stay healthy (so many times with Marcus Davenport). This situation is a little more likely now, though, given his additional training. Perhaps this can be the one thing that will turn this draft pick from borderline bust to solid contributor. I think we can all agree that would be welcome development in his career, and an unlikely boon for the Lions DB room.

The Lions’ have a lot of positions that are likely already set in stone coming into the offseason. Take, for instance, offensive tackle. It’s a foregone (and safe) conclusion that the Lions will have Blake Miller at right tackle, and Penei Sewell at left tackle. However, the roster is far from written in stone. If you know me, you also know I love a good underdog story. Let’s dig in on four Lions underdogs who have a chance to break the 53 man roster.

Ahmed Hassanein - Defensive End

I have loved Hassanein since he was selected by the Lions in the sixth round of last year’s draft. I became even more endeared with him when the Lions waived him with an injury settlement, and he came back to the team that drafted him despite other opportunities. He has shown he is loyal. However, the value doesn’t stop there: Hassanein has good/solid athleticism (see RAS below), and he has very little wear on his tires given he didn’t even start playing football until high school. Add in his 24 sacks at Boise State (largely tallied in his last two years) and you have potential.

He has an uphill climb behind the likes of Aidan Hutchinson, Derrick Moore, DJ Wonnum, and the oft injured Payton Turner. However, if the Lions can raise his level of play just a bit, I truly believe he can become a rotational player, and a feel good story for all Lions players and fans alike.

Thomas Harper - Safety

I really feel like Thomas Harper has an opportunity ahead of him. I do understand the Lions have the likes of Christian Izien and Avante Maddox who are going to be the first players off the bench when it comes to Kirby and Branch missing time. However none of us should sleep on Thomas Harper.

Did he give up a bit too much in coverage? The answer is yes, but many times I saw the flashes. Since coming into the league he has notched 63 tackles, half a sack, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, 2 interceptions, and 7 pass deflections. None of that happens by accident. If there is any time for him to take the next step, it is now. Keep an eye on Harper, I am not convinced we won’t see him getting more time this year than last.

Jay Tufele - Defensive Tackle / Nose Tackle

This offseason the Lions lost DJ Reader and Roy Lopez, both are nose tackles who were critical to the defensive line. If the Lions deploy the defensive line in the same way they have in the past, then that means it’s time to start looking at Jay Tufele. Now, I don’t have stats to back this one up, this is based on nothing more than a gut feeling. However… Let’s talk through this.

Roy Lopez was not expected to be anything special last year with the Lions. He was likely looked at as a reserve option to DJ Reeder and nothing more. However, he turned out to be very productive in the middle of the Lions’ line. Even if they do change the defensive deployment, Kelvin Sheppard has shown he knows how to effectively use nose tackles. Tufele is plenty athletic for a nose tackle, and was picked in the fourth round by the Jaguars in 2021 for a reason. I have a very strong feeling that if he can take the direction of Sheppard, he has a chance to be a piece in the middle of the defense. Having a giant body to soak up gaps won’t hurt anything either.

Of course none of this means anything until the production shows up. I may be wrong on all accounts. But if there is one team where these players have a chance, it’s the Lions. The Lions have shown how much you make, where you are drafted, or what you have done in the past doesn’t mean anything to them. Simply show up, take direction, and show them you have what it takes to play. I think all three of these guys have that potential.

In Dan Campbell’s most recent press conference he stated outright that Jahmyr Gibbs would be the Lions bellcow back moving forward. With the addition of Pacheco, and players like Vaki and

Saylers on the roster, what does this mean for them? Let’s dive in and see what we are likely to see in the upcoming year from the Lions running back room.

The first thing that came to my mind was simply breaking down how many snaps are given to a bellcow back from a percentage perspective. The one bellcow back that really came to mind was Saquon Barkley from the 2024/2025 season with the Eagles (shoutout to my aunt who is a big Eagles fan), where he rushed for 2005 rushing yards. If you break down the numbers, Barkley rushed for 345 snaps, and the Eagles rushed for 478 snaps. Meaning Saquon rushed for 72% of snaps. We have our baseline.

For Lions data, I am going to go back to the 2024/2025 season as well. This is given that the Lions struggled to rush last year with their offensive line problems, and rushed less than they had previously from a snap perspective. In 2024/2025 the Lions rushed for 534 snaps, a 72% share of those snaps is 384, divided over 17 games is 23 snaps (rounded up). The remaining snaps are 150, divided over 17 games gives us 9 snaps remaining (rounded up). Because of rounding and such, let’s take Gibbs share down to 22, and bring the remaining snaps to 10.

Given all the data, I think this a pretty clear picture has been painted. There is going to be a share of snaps for RB2 (outside of Gibbs), and probably next to none for RB3. The Craig Reynolds days are done in Detroit, and honestly, I think that is alright. I am excited to see what happens when they shift the rushing methodology.

Furthermore I think this will be a very good thing for RB2 Pacheco (whom I really like). Pacheco has struggled under a heavier running load as of late, with both production and injury. He seems (in my opinion) to come out fresh early, and then fall off. The hope would be, limiting his snaps will play a dual purpose role. For his 10 snaps he should be fresh and ready to go, that’s number one. Secondly, if Gibbs were to need a game or two, Pacheco should be ready to go and fresh enough to fill in on a more consistent basis (with a much larger split for Vaki or Saylers). It makes sense for all parties involved, and aligns with the contract Pacheco was willing to take.

Finally, I do think there could be a snap or two a game either added or taken from Pacheco or Gibbs (or added outright) and given to Vaki or Saylers. Just enough to keep them ready in case they are needed unexpectedly on gameday. We don’t want them getting too rusty.

At the end of the day this is all speculation, none of us will know what is going to happen until the Lions hit the field. However, things are likely to look much different this year. Or who knows? Perhaps this is all a smoke screen. I just think Dan’s comments align far too well with the reality of the roster to be a smoke screen. Only time will tell.
